When comparing prices, compare minutes of actual therapist attention; the out-of-network hour is often the better value per minute, and a gap exception or superbill can claw back much of the cost.

Do You Need a Referral?

Every state now allows some form of direct access to physical therapy, meaning you can usually book without a physician referral, though some states limit visit counts before one is required and some insurance plans require a referral regardless of state law. Two quick calls settle it: the PT clinic (they know your state's rules cold) and your insurer.

What You Are Treating

The first visit is an evaluation: posture, breathing, core, and usually an internal assessment done with consent and care.
